Furman University Wylie Mathematics Tournament
The Furman University Wylie Mathematics Tournament is a high school math competition sanctioned for schools from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and Florida.
Competition Format
The tournament consists of an individual test and then a ciphering contest. Awards are given to the six highest scoring students on the senior exam, the three highest scoring students on the junior exam and the top four schools as determined by the scores on the individual tests and the ciphering. The schools are split into two divisions based on school population. Division I contains the schools with the higher populations.
Individual Test
Ever since 2000 the individual test has consisted of 32 multiple choice questions and two tiebreakers to be solved in 2 hours. The topics tested are generally the standard topics on non-Calculus high school math competitions. Everything up through Pre-Calculus is fair game.
The test is scored as 1 point for each correct answer, 0 points for blank answers, and -.25 for incorrect answers except for the tiebreakers which are used only if there are ties among the top scorers.
There is also a Junior Test for students in grade 10 or lower which goes by the same format.
Ciphering
Each team selects three students to represent them in the ciphering contest. The three students go up one at a time to compete against members from other teams. The first few students to answer correctly get extra points with the first person getting the most bonus points and so forth. Other teams can still answer as long as they do so in the given time limit.
