Frustum

A frustum is the solid that remains when the upper part of a cone or pyramid is intersected or sliced by a plane parallel to the base of the cone or pyramid.


Area of a cone frustum

The area of the frustum of a cone is $\frac{1}{3}h(R^2+Rr+r^2)$, where R and r are the two radii of the lower and upper circle of the cone, respectively, and h is the height of the frustum.

Problems

A solid in the shape of a right circular cone is 4 inches tall and its base has a 3-inch radius. The entire surface of the cone, including its base, is painted. A plane parallel to the base of the cone divides the cone into two solids, a smaller cone-shaped solid $C$ and a frustum-shaped solid $F,$ in such a way that the ratio between the areas of the painted surfaces of $C$ and $F$ and the ratio between the volumes of $C$ and $F$ are both equal to $k$. A lampshade is made in the form of the lateral surface of the frustum of a right circular cone. The height of the frustum is $3\sqrt3$ inches, its top diameter is $6$ inches, and its bottom diameter is $12$ inches. A bug is at the bottom of the lampshade and there is a glob of honey on the top edge of the lampshade at the spot farthest from the bug. The bug wants to crawl to the honey, but it must stay on the surface of the lampshade. What is the length in inches of its shortest path to the honey?
