The denominator of a fraction is the number under the horizontal bar, or vinculum.
It represents the amount of parts in an object. The denominator can never be equal to zero. An expression such as

. As the denominator of a fraction gets smaller, the value of the fraction will get larger. Conversely, as the denominator of a fraction gets larger, the value of the fraction gets smaller.
If the absolute value of the denominator is greater than the absolute value of the numerator of a fraction, it is a proper fraction. If it is the other way around, the fraction is an improper fraction.
