Elementary School Level Math Competitions:
- Winchester Math Competition (WinMaC) is a competition for fourth and fifth (until 2024 where they switched it up to 4th to 8th) graders hosted by Winchester High school. It consists of four rounds: dash, theme, team, and guts. Competitors form teams of up to four people. It is an annual contest that takes place in the spring. website
- Acton-Boxborough Math Competition (ABMC) can be taken by elementary schoolers. See the Middle School section below for more information.
Middle School Level Math Competitions
AoPS hosts middle school math forums where students can discuss contest problems and mathematics.
- Massachusetts MathCounts is part of the national MathCounts competition. This competition has individual and team rounds, where teams are usually organized in school. However, if a school has not signed up a team, students can compete individually. This competition is organized in a sprint-target-countdown-team format, where sprint round is a test of speed, target is a test of accuracy, countdown is a math-bowl style round, and team is a team round. This test is taken over the course of a day
- Intermediate Math League of Eastern Massachusetts (IMLEM) This competition has individual and team rounds, and teams are organized in school. This competition has five rounds, mystery (misc), geometry, number theory, arithmetic, algebra, and team. Each scoring competitor competes in three individual rounds and the team round. - Acton-Boxborough Math Competition (ABMC) is a competition hosted by Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. The onsite competition has a sprint, accuracy, and team round. They also have three monthly online competitions in the fall. Their sponsors include AoPS, Dropbox, Texas Instruments, Wolfram Research. For more information and old tests, go to their website.
- Lexington Math Tournament (LMT) is a competition hosted by Lexington High school. This competition has a speed, accuracy, team, and guts round, and teams are usually organized outside of school. This is usually a semiannual test, with a spring and fall test. For more information and old tests, go to their website.
- Belmont Math Hunt (BMH) is a competition run by students from Belmont High School. The competition features themed sets of problems distributed throughout many classrooms like a scavenger hunt. Students work in teams, going from room to room to solve the problems and watch scores update in real time. More information can be found at their website.
- Sharon Math and Science Tournament (SMST) is a competition hosted by Sharon High School. Teams usually organize outside of school. This competition contains both math and science aspects. There are math individual, science individual, team, and design challenge rounds. The team round consists of math and science portions, which are not handed out separately. - Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament -- Each year, students from all over the country visit either MIT or Harvard to participate in a contest administered by veterans of math competitions attending the two schools. website
