Georgia Tech High School Math Competition
The Georgia Tech High School Mathematics Competition is an annual math tournament hosted and run by the mathematics department and honors society of the Georgia Institute of Technology (better known as Georgia Tech). The 2007 competition will occur on Saturday, February 24, 2007.
Format
There are two divisions of competition (varsity and junior varsity), each with the same structure. There is a one-hour, twenty-question multiple choice test, followed by ten ciphering questions, each worth five points if solved in the first minute, or three points if solved in the second minute. A school's team score is a weighted average (70% multiple choice and 30% ciphering) of the four highest multiple-choice scores and the four highest ciphering scores (not necessarily held by the same people).
The top 40–50 or 20–25 competitors, for varsity and junior varsity, respectively, are then invited to take a two-hour, five-question written proofs examination. These papers are graded by panel of three Georgia Tech faculty and two students. Individual placement is based solely on performance of this examination, although top ciphering scorers will also be recognized. The top individuals in each division will be offered scholarships good only at Georgia Tech, and the top teams in each division will also be recognized.
Registration is $17 per student. The registration deadline is currently January 26, 2007, but registration may close early if all available spots are taken. For further details, consult the competition website.
