For his birthday, Bert gets a box that holds 125 jellybeans when filled to capacity. A few weeks later, Carrie gets a larger box full of jellybeans. Her box is twice as high, twice as wide and twice as long as Bert's. Approximately, how many jellybeans did Carrie get?

Solution

Assume Bert's box is $1 \times 1 \times 1$ which is $1$ cubic meter. Then his box holds $125$ jellybeans per cubic meter. Carrie has a box that is $2 \times 2 \times 2$ which is $8$ cubic meters. Her box holds eight times as many jellybeans as Carrie's which is $(8)(125)=\boxed{\text{(E)}\ 1000}$ .
