In mathematics, multiplication is a binary operation between two elements in a set, in a broad sense. Depending on what set of elements are interacting, there are many types of multiplications with different properties. The multiplication sign is represented by the "x" or a medium sized dot $(\cdot)$. Multiplication is the inverse of division.

Multiplication is achieved by adding a number to itself as many times as the second number has value. For example, 4x4 would equal 4+4+4+4, which in turn equals 16. This is called repeated addition.
