Knot theory is a field of mathematics concerned with knots. Knot theory is frequently associated with Algebraic topology and Geometric Topology.

A knot is an embedding of S^1 (the circle) into R^3. Every knot is homeomorphic to S^1. Knots are classified into knot types by isotopy class. (ambient-isotopy)
