SASMO which stands for Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad is a mathematical competition for students in grade 2 to 11. Most nations participating in the competition are in Asia, but there are also nations in Europe and in the Middle East that take part in it.

Registration and Eligibility

Any student between grade 2 to grade 11 are eligible to participate. However, only students that is a resident of Singapore may participate as an individual candidate. The registration process involves a fee and takes places few months prior to the testing date.

Problem Format, Scoring, and Rules

Format

The test is 90 minutes long and consists of two sections. The first section(Section A) which is the first 15 questions is a multiple choice section. The last 10 questions are in the second section(Section B) are answered from integers from 000 to 9999, similar to the answering format of AIME except it also includes 4 digit answers.

Scoring

In section A, 2 points are given for a correct answer, 0 points are given to an unanswered question and 1 point is given to a wrong answer. In section B, 4 points are given to an answered question and 0 points are given to an unanswered or an incorrect answer. Each student are given 15 points at the beginning in order to avoid negative scores.

Rules

90 minutes are given to solve all the problems. However, all students are required to stay in the exam hall for at least 75 minutes. Calculators are not allowed in the exam, calculations could be done on scrap paper. Exam papers or any notes written during the constant can not be taken out.
