A formula is an some relation, usually an equation, with a variable on the left hand side of the equation and some other mathematical expression on the right hand side, usually to be evaluated to solve for the variable on the left hand side. Some examples include Heron's Formula, Vieta's Formulas, and Brahmagupta's Formula.
