However, I'm not crazy about the proof, because it involves a kind of unnatural construction, it's assymetric, and it doesn't work out that nicely with directed distances. Of course, it's much better than a complex numbers proof or something, though. I have a vague recollection that we covered a nicer proof (in addition to this one) at MOP this summer, but my notes have not yet revealed any intelligible outline of it, and a cursory Google search didn't reveal anything better than what I wrote here. I just rewrote (wrote?) this article.
