Sam Vandervelde is one of the founders of the Mandelbrot Competition and ran the competition until its completion in 2019. He was an IMO silver medalist, a 2-time winner of the USAMO, a perfect scorer on the AIME, and a top-10 participant at National MATHCOUNTS. He is now a professor at St. Lawrence University.
