Overview

The first law of thermodynamics simply states that energy is conserved and cannot be destroyed. Energy can only be converted from one form to another. This means that energy can only be converted from potential to kinetic. In other words, $\Delta U = Q + W$, where $U$ is the potential energy, $Q$ is the amount of heat dissipated into the environment, and $W$ is the work done on the system.
