You could just make out all of the patterns that make the top positive. In this case, you would have the following patterns:

+−−+, −++−, −−−−, ++++, −+−+, +−+−, ++−−, −−++. There are 8 patterns and so the answer is $\boxed{\textbf{(C) } 8}$.
