Division B Top Five Teams
Historical Notes
The B division began in 1978.
In 1992, an alternate team won division B, though they were not allowed to be named champions. That alternate team included five members of the would-be Alabama ARML team, including Mathew Crawford. A similar event happened in 2012, when an alternate team at the Iowa site had the second highest B division score, but was not eligible for awards.
In 1998, Taiwan ARML (Taiwan Yale) would have tied for second place in division B, but international "Guest" teams were not eligible for awards.
In 2006, three Taiwan ARML teams (Taiwan D, Taiwan C, and Taiwan B) would have placed between the first and second place division B teams, but international "Guest" teams were not eligible for awards.
In 2007, two Taiwan ARML teams (Taiwan A, Taiwan B) would have placed ahead of all division B team, tied for 22nd and 24th overall, respectively, but international teams were not eligible for awards. One indvididual [need name] from Taiwan would have placed in the top 3 students overall on the individual round tiebreaker but was not considered eligible for that prize, either.
In 2008, the posted results listed both Taiwan A and Taiwan B from the Taiwan ARML organization as being in Division A, with Taiwan B indicated as "SL" or site honors at Las Vegas; however, the prizes for site honors at Las Vegas went to San Diego ARML (San Diego Surf). A new team from Hong Kong ARML called "Paradise Mall Hong Kong" scored higher than any Division B team; the results list them in Division B and as "N1" or national winner in Division B; however the prizes for national winner in Division B went to the Vermont All-Stars as listed above.
In 2010, there was a international (IRML) division, with all three IRML teams, two of them new, at the Las Vegas Site. China (with only an 8 member team) was first in IRML, Macau (in their second year) was second, and Vietnam third. China and Macau had the same score, which was 11 points higher than any Division B team.
In the 2011 international division, the winner was Singapore, a new team, with China 2nd, Macau 3rd, and the two teams from the Philippines 4th and 5th. Singapore, China, and Macau were 18th, 19th, and 28th overall.
