Talk:Mathematicial notation

(Redirected from Talk:Symbols & conventions)

I copied this from the AoPS Formulary, and it needs to be converted to Wiki format. Please help! Also, credit for writing this GREAT article goes to ZetaX. --Sean 23:56, 26 June 2006 (EDT)

I take issue with the notation $\mathbb{Z}_n$ for integers modulo n. When n is prime, this notation is used for the p-adic integers, which do not really have any other notation (well perhaps ${\widehat{\mathbb{Z}}}_p$, but that's not much different). --ComplexZeta 01:22, 27 June 2006 (EDT)

I also don't like the notation $\mathbb{Z}_n$, but that is what most people use on ML/AoPS.

Okay, but that ought to change. That notation is losing popularity in mathematics in general. --ComplexZeta 11:08, 27 June 2006 (EDT)

\text doesn't work and \textrm doesn't seem to recognize spaces. My suggestion is to change to symbols. For example, the first Legendre symbol case: $1 \leftrightarrow \exist x\in\mathbb{Z}_p^*:x^2\equiv a\mod p$ (Error compiling LaTeX. Unknown error_msg) Does anyone have a better solution?

You could use "\,", "\ " and "\;" to introduce space into the text. It looks ugly as tex code, but it makes the result look nice. --JBL 11:50, 7 September 2006 (EDT)
